Sat Yoga Institute

The Supreme Power of Truth, Goodness, and Love

A Wisdom School

The Sat Yoga Institute continues the tradition of wisdom schools that have been the foundation of human culture for as long as there have been historic records.

What is a wisdom school?

It is an ancient form of esoteric educational academy where mature souls gather for spiritual instruction, meditation and dharma combat.

From the earliest pre-Vedic schools of original Yoga; the mystery schools of ancient Egypt and Greece; Nalanda University that served to ferment Buddhism; the esoteric schools of kabbalah and alchemy, to contemporary shamanic yogic wisdom schools such as the Sat Yoga Institute; wisdom schools are the home ground where the human spirit has been and is still being nourished, refined, and transformed.

… that includes all other yogas

The Sat Yoga Institute focuses on Gyana Yoga and Raja Yoga. Gyana Yoga (also spelled Jnana) contains all the other yogas in conceptual form. It is the ancient discipline of using Reason—Logos—to attain Liberation. Raja Yoga is the practice of meditation, silencing the mind in order to realize the Self.

“Human consciousness is a spectrum of potentiality. We have not as a species attained the upper end of the spectrum. We must do so now, and thereby create a shift in the planetary noetic field.”

~ Shunyamurti

Curriculum and Path

Heart-Centric Intelligence Development

Sat Yoga is a non-dogmatic path of insight authenticated by one’s own Self-realization.

A center for higher learning

The Sat Yoga Institute is a center for higher learning, transformational processing, and deep meditation, led and energized by the presence and teachings of Shunyamurti.

Shunyamurti's teachings

Shunyamurti’s teachings are a synthesis of the most subtle wisdom of East and West. The knowledge of the ancient sages is translated into practical contemporary terms that integrate the insights of science with the secret heart of the world’s highest traditions of non-duality.

Vibrant, dynamic, and always evolving

The curriculum responds to the needs of students and current events. Continuously expanding and always inclusive, the curriculum draws from the ancient sages and post-modern philosophers, from books, movies, art, drama, and the latest scientific insights.

Stimulating your own sublime intelligence

The classes stimulate and develop your highest levels of intelligence, critical reasoning, and will to engage in spiritual transformation.

Shift your paradigm

Sat Yoga is actively engaging in research into our potential supernormal capacities, including next-generation therapies that go beyond transpersonal psychology, shamanic and energetic healing; the deeper yogic sciences for the development of our latent siddhis (yogic powers) to tap the hidden potential of our supernormal abilities.

A Synthesis of East and West

The Lineage of No Lineage

Sat Yoga does not come from a specific lineage but directly from Source. However, we study all the great spiritual traditions, including Dzogchen, Zen, Kabbalah, esoteric Christianity, ancient Egyptian wisdom, Taoism, and Vedic lineages. We also study the great thinkers and artists of the West, and the great breakthroughs in science that support the collective return to spirituality. We draw inspiration from all who have explored the potentialities of consciousness. But our patron sage is Sri Ramana Maharshi.

Ongoing Classes

A taste of just some of the ongoing classes offered at the Sat Yoga Institute

Pre-Dawn Meditation

Following the ancient practice of yogis, we begin the day by meditating together at 4am. This gathering creates a purified and unified energy field, enabling stabilization in Presence, producing clarity of mind and an open heart for the day ahead. Shunyamurti will sometimes offer a new teaching at the end.

Satsang with Shunyamurti

In these sacred community gatherings, Shunyamurti offers guidance to resolve the most difficult and delicate matters of the heart. Shunyamurti will usually offer a short teaching or guided meditation, followed by an open floor for any and all questions to gain clarity and empowerment.

Study Group

Focusing on specific modules of information both from the core of the Sat Yoga curriculum as well as recent teachings given by Shunyamurti in classes, weekend seminars, or retreats, Study Group offers students a chance to revisit and assimilate profound or complex material, gaining a deeper understanding of these essential topics. This class is led by Radha Ma, the director of the ashram teaching faculty. Radha Ma has been studying atmanology with Shunyamurti for the past twenty years.

Movie Nights

On most Saturday nights, the Sat Yoga Ashram turns into the Sat Yoga Cinémathèque, screening films to expand the mind, encourage critical thinking and spiritual development. Showing a wide variety of films, from Tarkovsky to Kubrick, from Bresson to Malick to Jodorowsky, as well as documentaries on art, philosophy, current affairs, hard sciences, psychoanalysis, parapsychology, and exopolitics, the sangha gathers to explore the spiritual journey of cosmic consciousness, ego dissolution and supreme liberation through the lens of film.

Book Group

Although meditation is a higher and more direct portal to the Absolute than books, it is nonetheless very useful in the development of our intelligence and capacity to understand the implications of the energies we are receiving to review the great works of the sages, philosophers, and saints. Authors we have studied recently include Marguerite Porete, Santa Teresa de Avila, Wolfgang Giegerich, and Shoshana Felman. Book Group is an opportunity to discuss these great works, and grow together in understanding.

Divine Renaissance

One of the core missions of Sat Yoga is to be a catalyst for the rebirth of human culture. As part of the development of understanding of past moments of attempted renaissance, we explore the most significant works of art, drama, literature, poetry, and music from the history of humanity, analyzing the deeper meanings and finding the hidden mystical initiations coded into the works of the masters.

How to Penetrate the Complexification of Spiritual Theory

A simple teaching

The great spiritual traditions all started out as a very simple and direct transmission of Truth. Over time this became more and more complex. In this teaching Shunyamurti guides us through this process back to the Primordial Self.

The Yogas:

We employ Kundalini Yoga to guide the raising of vibrational frequency; Swapna Yoga helps in using dreams to speed Awakening; Mahavakya Yoga empowers us to speak accurately to heal those who need the medicine of Truth. Of course, we study Mandalic Yoga to perceive the patterns of the cosmos as metaphors of our own process; Hatha Yoga keeps the body healthy and electromagnetically charged; Bhakti Yoga keeps us humble, devoted to the One; and Nisarga Yoga keeps Presence constant. All the Yogas are combined in Karma Yoga, in which benevolent action happens objectively, but in the yogi’s subjective reality the changeless Self does nothing except emanate creative intelligence and love.

Dharma Combat:

Encounters with a spiritual teacher that can lead to breakthrough beyond ego.

Brahmachari:

One whose consciousness has merged with Brahman, the Absolute, and thus has been liberated from all desire, fear, attachment, and material frames of reference. Thus, a Brahmachari naturally lives a life of celibacy, simplicity, and inner solitude.

Satsang:

Meditative meetings in which the highest teachings are shared. Shunyamurti also offers guidance during questions and answers to resolve the most difficult and delicate matters of the heart.

Teleological:

Information, energy, or nonlinear change that occurs as the effect of events that take place in the future and alter the past, which is perceived in the present as non-ordinary phenomena, synchronicities, unpredictable emergent properties or other notable explicate arisings. The source of such forces may also lie beyond chronological time, in higher dimensions of the Real.

The process of non-process:

Since awakening is instantaneous, along with the recognition that one was never really in the dream, but enjoying the creation of the dream, it must be understood that making awakening into a process can only be part of the dream, and has nothing to do with Awakening itself.

The Real:

When we speak of the Real, unless otherwise qualified, we mean the Supreme Real. The Supreme Real does not appear. Appearance is not Real. All that appears is empty of true existence. There are no real things. All that is phenomenal is temporary, dependent, and reducible to a wave function of consciousness. The world does not exist independent of consciousness. There is no matter or material world. All is made of consciousness. Pure consciousness is Presence. It is no-thing, non-objective, not in space or time. All that appears in Presence, or to Presence, is an emanation of Presence, but is not different from That. This is one meaning of nonduality.

The Real is also a term used in Lacanian psychoanalysis. What Lacan means by the Real is that aspect of phenomenal appearance which is overwhelming, traumatic, or impossible. We would call that Real One. It is a relative Real, not Absolute. We add that there is a Real Two, which consists of divine love. Love is not an appearance, but it changes appearance, through recognition of its Source, into a divine manifestation, a projection of God’s sublimely beautiful Mind as infinite fractal holographic cosmos. Real Three is the unchanging Absolute, beyond all conception or image.

Dharma and dharma:

When we use the term Dharma (capitalized), we refer to our dedication to living in accord with the timeless principles of impeccable integrity that keep us in harmony with Nature and our Supernatural Source.

When we use the term without capitalization, we refer to our acceptance of the community’s processes, protocols, and chain of command with the “Haji! Spirit” of going the “extra mile” and working overtime when necessary to make the impossible inevitable, as our unconditional act of surrender to Love.
