Now, we’ve said that this is Good Friday, this is the day—let’s take Christianity literally for the moment and say that the crucifixion is not just a metaphor. It is also certainly a metaphor (everyone is being crucified, the ego is now in that state and must ascend from that), but let’s assume that Jesus was a historical being. Did Jesus suffer on the cross when he was crucified? How many people think he suffered? Does anyone think he suffered? One true Christian! How many people think he did not suffer—are sure he did not suffer? OK, so Jesus is man and God, right? If he’s man, he suffered. If he’s God, he didn’t suffer. But he’s both man and God. Now, does that mean he suffered halfway, below the waist or in the arms and the feet? Or does it mean that the God part of him, the divine part, so took over the human that the man in him became God? And that would mean that God became the man, right? It’s that mystery that Christianity represents: God became man so that man can become God. The crucifixion is a model and a map of our own life story, of what we have to achieve. Whatever we think of as human in us, whatever in us is suffering in any way, has to become divinized. And then that suffering aspect of our being, which is the ego, will become divinized—will morph into soul and then morph into the Holy Spirit. We will become one with the Supreme Self. But that has to be achieved—it is not automatic, because we have fallen into the illusion, and we must come out of the illusion.
So Christ was not in the illusion even though his body was part of the illusion. That’s the truth for each of you. And, by realizing that, you can be free of whatever suffering the body is going through—it will not be your suffering and it will not create any disturbance. It will not take away your peace. It will not take away your divinity or your freedom. You are already liberated—you don’t have to become liberated in the bardo of life. You are always already liberated because the Self—the divine Self, the Real Self—never is the body. So even if you identify with the character in the movie and your heart pounds, nonetheless, nothing happens to you. And if you see a movie—nowadays, you know—I discovered recently by wanting to find a movie about the end of the world that there are hundreds of them—they’ve made so many movies about either the nuclear war, or the alien invasion that destroys the world, or the pandemic that destroys the world. All of the ways that the world is being destroyed, Hollywood prefigured some years back. I even discovered there’s a film (we’re now moving from military operation Z of Russia and Ukraine to World War Z)—there’s a movie called World War Z, actually, that’s about the zombie apocalypse. So even that is prefigured. How did they know about the Z?
But that one Intelligence knows everything, knows the future, creates it. This is a simulation, it’s a dream. It’s a film that has been written by an infinite Intelligence with a very strange sense of humor—and all of this is humorous. So if you see a film where millions of people die, and if you realize it’s a film, it will not disturb you because nobody really died. But if you identify with a character in the film, you are going to want to take cyanide to get out of the suffering that they are going through. You’re not going to be able to handle it if you are in ego-consciousness. You are not going to be able to handle what is coming to the world if you are identified as a body. The only way you can get out of the Lower Death Drive that wants to avoid pain by killing itself before it’s killed by all of the external forces (and there are a lot of them coming at you)—the only way out is the Upper Death Drive—realizing that you’re not in this film and that you’re one with God. Get out through ascension, not through descent into hell. That’s my recommendation, and that’s the recommendation of all the sages: get out through realization that you’re not in it in the first place.
So I hope that is clear to everyone and that you have the capacity to get out of it simply by snapping out of the trance that is the belief that you are in a real physical world, because it is only mind—it’s made of thoughts, things are “thinks,” everything is a dream. And once you understand that, the dream will no longer create disturbance, you will see the divine Light that is the energy that’s projecting the dream, and you will realize the source of that light as the Self. That’s the purpose of meditation.
So I hope that makes sense to everyone—that it is very clear and that it is understood that the way out of the illusion cannot be by doing anything, because the idea of doing something means that you are ratifying that you are someone in the illusion who has to do something. You can only get out of the illusion by not doing. And that’s why many traditions say meditation is not an action. They even talk about, “No, we should be calling it non-meditation because there is no one meditating and nothing to meditate on.” It’s that whole concept of split-mind that is created by the ego that sees things in terms of subject and object that is the problem. When the mind is silenced and language is no longer produced in the mind (since it is language that embeds us in duality because it is structured as subject-object); when language is eliminated from the mind, there is a space of nonduality that instantly returns, and in that space the realization of the Self can happen at any moment. So it’s the nondoing—we could say the fasting from doing—that is the way out…
