Ashram Greenhouse ~ The Short Cycle
The greenhouse is a vibrant explosion of abundance—seed saving, seedling cultivation, bountiful harvests, which we love sharing with visitors and our ashram community.
Almacigos (Seedlings)
In these last few weeks, the Premaculture team visted Almacigos del Sur near Palmares. Their production of almacigos (seedlings) is quite vast. They are hand watering continually from dawn until 3pm every day! They are also organically growing produce and ornamental plants for sale. It was very interesting to see their infrastructure, soil, seed bank, and more!
Beautiful Harvests!
Cucumbers, Eggplants, Tomatoes, and Sweet Peppers
Big Daikon Radish, Huge Camote, and Full-sized Beets
We did a test to see if leaving the beets to continue growing for 10 weeks would allow them to get bigger and still retain their sweetness. It was successful!
Explosive Red Meat Radish and Hearty Heart of Palm
Cucumber success!
Three varieties: Beit Alpha, Natsu Fushinari, and Brown Russian.
Chilies!
Hot Chilies have been producing well, including a surprise jalapeño variety and Sweet Chilies have produced a small number of nice fruits.
2020 Seed Saving Project
Umpqua Broccoli went from flowering to pods full of seeds! We are currently collecting seeds from 3 lettuce varieties, arugula, and several others.
Culantro flowering! We recently learned that culantro plants need support when going to seed, and that when planted too close together, not all the flowers get fertilized and the seeds are prone to molding.
Giant Corn Crop and a Bountiful Snow and Sugar Snap Pea Plantation!
Gorgeous Summer Flowers!
